Due next Friday by class time, Dec 13 (in lieu of our Final Test): a 500 word essay about the exhibition: "A Theater of Operations" The Gulf Wars 1991-2011 that you viewed during the week at PS1 MOMA at 22-25 Jackson Ave, Queens- open every day from 12-6 except Tues & Wed.  Free

Week of November 22-Art and Social Practice


In class- watch the film: The Wasteland
Online assignment: 
finish the film and then write a one page analysis of important ideas in the film about art and social change

Homework: Prepare for Oral Report- Be ready to present your Oral Report on December 6
Oral Report Presentation : Prepare and present a 7-10 minute oral report with projected images which will describe the works and ideas of the contemporary artist  you chose. Ask yourself these questions when doing your research: 1. What style is this artists work? i.e., Site-specific, Conceptual, Installation, 2. Who are their influences?  3. What is innovative about their particular work in terms of process or use of materials? #4. What common themes or concepts do they work with?
You will be graded on the following:
Visual Presentation- Quality & good choice of representative artworks
Organization-Use an outline so you can present your information in a well-organized way including:
            Introduction- summary of what is significant about your artists work
Main body- A minimum of 5 artworks that are good examples of your artists  most important work and be familiar and knowledgeable about these artworks 
Summary- Brief statement that summarizes this artists style      
Research- how much your presentation exhibits extensive research on your artists based on your 3 sources                       

Post your bibliography on your blog or bring a hard copy to class

Week of Nov 1- Modern Movements- Dada-Pop Art



Lecture, Slide Presentation: Dada, Surrealism and After 1945- Modern Movements: Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art
Reading assignment: Chap 24: Postwar Modern Movements
Online Assignment : Dada Collage- Create a collage by cutting up parts of photographs and reassembling in a new and thought-provoking combination. You may use photoshop for this project if you know how to use the program. Otherwise, use cut & paste method. Work in black & white primarily- you can use one color if important for your idea. You can zerox a color image or transfer to black & white digitally. 
Formal elements to consider: Dynamic composition, contrast of scale, value & theme, unity, illusion of depth of space. Format requirements: 8” x 10” , no white space, no words. Cut out subject matter very specifically(the outline of the shapes).
Create visual relationships that create a new meaning or associations-post image on your blog- consider this question when making your collage: What is dynamic about the association of images as well as the formal elements?
